Apollo story correction

    62

    Dear Editor,

A correction for the front page story in the Daily Universe on Tuesday, June 25. Jeremiah Christenot was not “the first white person to get a standing ovation” from the Apollo crowd.

On August 16, 1957, Buddy Holly and the Crickets performed at the Apollo Theater. The audience not only gave them a standing ovation, but also danced in the aisles for most of the performance.

The details are a bit fuzzy as to whether or not any other white group had a successful performance at the Apollo prior to the Crickets, but the claim has been made that Buddy Holly was the first white boy to get the Apollo crowd on their feet.
