Letter to the Editor: Anti-cheating campaign not smart

    Dear Editor,

I am writing in regard to the Student Honor Association’s campaign — “Smarties know that Cheaters Burn.” Candies with this slogan were handed out by SHA at the Testing Center on the night of Tuesday, April 2.

Although the message was somewhat humorous, it left a bad taste in my mouth for the SHA.

The slogan “Cheaters Burn” is extremely offensive, quite negative and in poor taste. At this university we should be encouraging good behavior.

As a BYU student, I was offended by the message that SHA was sending. It would have been more appropriate to say something like “It’s smart to be honest.”

The SHA should be encouraging students to be honest by positive reinforcement of already instilled values — not by making judgment calls.
