On Thursday at 11:30 a.m. BYUSA will hold a Campus Town Meeting about the South Campus Area Master Plan. NewsNet will webcast the meeting live.
SCAMP representatives will discuss the master plan with students at the meeting in the Wilkinson Student Center Terrace.
Kevin Callahan the assistant director of community development who will be attending the meeting, said all students are welcome to attend and take part in the discussion.
“We will be talking about where things are at this point and have a discussion with the students to see if they feel it is beneficial to them,” Callahan said.
SCAMP is a redevelopment project that plans to create more student housing for BYU and encourage better land use for the allotted area extending from 900 E. to University Ave. and 800 N. to 500 N.
John Bennion, the BYUSA SAC Vice President, said the meeting will consist of a panel giving a 15 minute explanation of what SCAMP is. Following the presentation there will be a question and answer section.
“What we really want is students to ask their question and any question is a good question,” Bennion said. “Students can ask detailed questions or the general questions.”
Bennion said SCAMP is an important plan and he wants the students to get involved.
Julie Franklin, the director of housing at BYU, said no changes were made in the SCAMP redevelopment plan, but the meeting is to help students understand the issues in the plan.
She said BYUSA is putting on the meeting as the first large forum for students to attend and talk with SCAMP representatives.
Franklin has been involved with the technical part of the SCAMP committee by providing information such as the number of students who attend BYU, available housing spaces and how many occupants are not BYU students.
One other statistic is the demographic trend of single housing. Numbers of single students have been increasing since the 1993 survey.
The meeting will start at 11:30 a.m. and end at 1 p.m.
BYUSA encourages students to attend, ask questions and give feedback about the issues surrounding SCAMP.
