The filing of charges against the Springville man shot by SWAT team members May 23 has been delayed.

Springville Police Lt. Dave Caron said he expected to file the charges against Michael Olsen Wednesday, but the county attorney found that some parts of the report were incomplete and will not accept them until completed. Caron said he expects the reports to be finished and submitted by Friday.

Caron said Springville police are filing the papers asking for charges of aggravated assault against a police officer, but the county attorney will be the one to decide if the charges are appropriate after further investigation.

Earlier this week the woman who was inside the house with Olsen at the time of the shooting came forward and said that Olsen did not actually raise his gun and point it at officers the night he was shot. Caron said the statements she made on the night of the incident “directly corroborated” with those of the officers, and he doesn’t know why she is now coming forward with a different account of what happened.

Olsen was shot in the shoulder and leg last week by SWAT team members when he came out of his house and pointed a gun at the officers, according to Springville police. The SWAT team had been told that Olsen had been drinking, had a loaded gun and was suicidal.

According to reports, Olsen came out of his front door holding his gun and refused to drop the weapon after repeated requests from officers.

When he raised his gun and pointed it at members of the SWAT team, Olsen was shot at and hit twice. Caron confirmed that it was only one officer that fired the six rounds at Olsen.

Olsen appeared in the 4th District Court May 30 for a bail hearing, and bail was set at $5,000. He remains in jail until he posts bail or appears in court for his trial.
