NewsNet sweeps Rocky Mountain journalism competition

BYU NewsNet placed first for the best overall Web page and took third place for best in television among large four-year colleges in the intermountain west.

The Rocky Mountain Collegiate Media Association handed out awards for its annual competition this spring.

“The reason we continue to win awards is because we have excellent content,” NewsNet Web Director Michael Buhrley said. “It’s the students that are writing stories, gathering video and producing sound bites.”

The Web page integrates the news operations of The Daily Universe, KBYU-TV, KBYU-FM and CCN-TV.

For over seven years BYU has published news online and has consolidated news sources since the fall of 1997.

The RMCMA competition includes colleges from fourteen states including Arizona, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Nevada, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Dakota, Texas, Utah and Wyoming.

“They try to spread around the awards,” Editorial Director Darla White said. “It’s unusual to see one school sweep.”
