Letter to the editor: South Carolina should decide on fate of state flag

    56

    Dear Editor:

It would be foolish to say that the Confederate battle flag, which flies over the South Carolina capitol building, means only one thing. To some, it symbolizes the glory of the old South and the blood that was spilt in the Civil War. To others, it is a symbol of slavery that is a sad part of American history.

The flag does have its place today, a place we call museums. I would not want that flag flown over any government building. However, I agree with Gov. Bush that this is an issue that must be solved by the state of South Carolina. Too many issues that belong in the state have been handed to the federal government and it would be a mistake for anyone other than the residents of South Carolina to make this decision.
