Letter to the editor: Horses well cared for at BYU

    93

    Dear Editor:

I am a volunteer TA for one of BYU’s intermediate equitation classes. I have taught this class for two years. I began my riding experiences at BYU and have now been riding for the past five years. I am grateful for the opportunity BYU has given me to fulfill my dreams of working with horses.

To answer Thursday’s letter “Holding your horses,” the BYU horse facilities are well taken care of. Yes, the mixture of precipitation and dirt does equal mud when horses are milling around. Horses, like most animals, actually love to be dirty. It keeps the flies off and is a method of self-grooming.

Since one can’t ask the horses if they are happy and expect a vocal response, the next best thing is to fulfill their needs. The horses housed at BYU are exercised regularly, fed, watered, vaccinated and loved. In my opinion, there is not a better place for the horses.
