Screaming at the top of your lungs to a cheer you and your Y Group composed, painting your faces blue, looking for every opportunity to offer service, and making 30 new friends are all activities to show your Cougar Blue spirit and empower your Y Group to victoriously conquer the “Catch the Spirit” spirit competition. Guess what? If your Y Group wins the Spirit Competition, you’ll be enjoying the thrilling water slides, the hot pools, adn the huge waves at Seven Peaks Water Resort, all expenses paid, including admission, locker rental, tube rental, and some sumptuous pizza, soda and chips.

Each Y Group will participate in various planned activities. These activites are designed to allow the creative participation of each member of a Y Group. Each Y Group is evaluated from a panel of highly competent judges who assign Spirit Points according to each group’s active participation, creativity, and enthusiasm.

The Spirit Competition facilitates new Cougars by challenging them to gain a sense of Y Group unity and BYU loyalty. As Y Groups work together on service projects, spirit activities, and attend New Student Orientation events, friendships develop, and the BYU experience becomes comprehensible.

The primary goals of the Spirit Competition are to nurture growth through participation in programs and activities and to encourage students to actively contribute to the campus community.

The Spirit Competition involves almost every activity during New Student Orientation.
