I-15 construction may cause havoc for those attending the Utah Arts Festival this weekend in Salt Lake City. Travelers better plan a little extra travel time.

In a news release from Wasatch Constructions, Michael Mower, chairman from Wasatch Construction, said that a little preplanning could save a lot of trouble for patrons of the festival.

“If people plan ahead, it won’t be a problem,” he said.

Starting 10 p.m. on Friday and continuing through 6 a.m. Monday, I-15 southbound will be closed down for construction from 600 North to 3300 South. Northbound I-15 will be shut down the same days from 2100 South to 600 North.

The closing is the first of several closures this summer to move traffic to new pavement, according to the news release.

“For those interested in getting to the festival from Provo, I recommend that they plan an extra ten minutes or so,” said Mower. “From Provo they just need to exit at 2100 South and take 300 West to get to downtown.”

Mower said for motorists to get to the festival from the north, they should exit at 600 North and take 300 West downtown. He also said for motorists who don’t need to access downtown who come from Provo can avoid the hassle of the closed roads by using I-215 northbound which is the easiest and most convenient route around Salt Lake. Then just use I-215 southbound to return to Provo.

The I-15 construction crew is utilizing warnings signs to warn to drivers coming into Salt Lake and those leaving the city to find the easiest roads to use. According to the news release, electronic signs, notifications listed at ports of entry and signs placed at the exits of the Arts Festival will warn motorists of the closures. Patrons can also listen to local stations to be reminded of the available routes into and around the downtown areas.

The closing may cause inconveniences for some travelers this weekend, but the Wasatch Constructions Company wants to be able to keep the interstate open for the weekend on the Fourth of July.
