Letter to the Editor: Campus employees miss out on holiday

    Dear Editor:

In regards to the article, “Day-longer holiday aimed for safe travel,” I have a bone to pick. I think the article only gave half the story and portrayed the administration as having all of our best interests in mind. The problem comes when you are a student and you are working for the university.

We were told from the beginning of the semester that we would have this extra day to travel, and so many of us made plans then to use the extra day and travel. We were excited about this change until last week, when we were told for the first time that the university has decided it must keep all services open on the Wednesday school will be out, including computer labs.

I don’t understand the logic behind this. My husband and I made plans months ago to be in Denver for Thanksgiving, leaving Tuesday after classes and work. Then came the announcement that students must still work the Wednesday, even though there won’t be any school. I know that a few students won’t be traveling far for Thanksgiving, but a majority of them will.

This seems to be a not-too-funny irony on the school giving us the extra day for safety. Those that will have to stay behind and work on Wednesday will still be making that trip late, and thus the safety factor is just the same as if this extra day were never given. What is the reasoning by the administration behind this? I would appreciate hearing others’ feelings on this subject.
