BYU campus can seem huge, and may take new students a while to learn where everything is. Campus tours have been added to New Student Orientation to help new students with this daunting task.

“New students with maps in their hands are easily recognized,” said Ben Kimball, the organizer of campus tours. Going on the campus tours with your Y-Group can eliminate that scenario.

During NSO, which is Aug. 27-29, several hours each day have been set aside for Y-Group Leaders to take their Y-Groups on a tour of campus and collect Y-Cards on the way.

Y-Cards are the same size as a baseball card and have a picture of a building or a service on the front with information about the building or service on the back of the card. The Y-Cards help new students learn about buildings and services on campus.

During the tour, the Y-Group Leader will give information about each building to the members of the Y-Group. At several points along the tour, booths will be set up to dispense the Y-Cards for the buildings in that area. The Y-Group will need to answer several questions about the buildings in the area before they receive their Y-Cards. This helps new students learn the layout of campus.

“Avoid missing your first week’s homework assignments because you can’t find your classes. Go on the campus tours,” Kimball advises.

A complete deck consists of 41 Y-Cards. Each complete deck of Y-cards collected by a Y-Group is worth points in the Spirit Competition (see related article).
