Letter to the editor: Diversity a virtue

First, many thanks to the freshmen FHE group handing out cookies at the exit of the Testing Center. All the things I don’t like about BYU are worth it when I realize the spontaneously kind and good-natured attitude of the student body.

As students we are bombarded daily with diversity propaganda (we are all being stewed). I strongly support such a movement towards diversity, but what does it mean? Is the administration (specifically BYUSA) trying to convince us that we are different, that BYU is not an isolated, homogeneous planet?

We are diverse, but such a statement does not become a reality by telling us that we are. The movement towards appreciation of diversity is an attitude that students themselves must decide individually, and then together they can influence the university.

Recent letters to the editor show anything but appreciation for diversity. This is blatant discrimination that is spouted against others based on clothing, music preferences, political ideals, religious beliefs, English language ability and personal financial circumstances. Diversity doesn’t mean there are some BYU students who aren’t white. Diversity means we can be nice to people who think and live differently than we do.
