Two BYU professors received Excellence in Teaching Awards last week from the BYU Division of Continuing Education.

Stan Taylor, professor of political science at BYU, and Victor Gibb, professor of organizational behavior at BYU’s Salt Lake Center, received recognition in education awards on Oct. 7. These awards are given annually to a BYU faculty member and a non-BYU instructor within the division of continuing education.

Taylor said that the award meant a lot to him, because it is a great tribute to be recognized for an effort in education.

“I was greatly flattered,” he said. “When you’ve worked at teaching as long as I have, it’s nice to be recognized.”

Lee Glines, director of the Salt Lake Center, said that Gibb brings a wealth of experience to his classroom.

The award has been presented to faculty members for 20 years, said Duane Hiatt, director of editorial and media productions for continuing education.

“This award is usually given to an unsung hero,” he said. “These are staff or administration who bless our lives in different ways. They go the extra mile to make the university work.”

Not all professors teach using the same style, so students are privileged to receive instruction from teachers with such varied backgrounds in education, Taylor said.

“The greatest reward is working with the fine young people, especially here at BYU,” he said. “It’s wonderful to be a professor at BYU, because the term ‘university’ denotes a universe of students.”

He said professors that are competent in their field and professional in their approach are effective educators.

The department of continuing education has the privilege of witnessing the great deeds of BYU professors, Hiatt said.

“Most students and teachers don’t get to see them,” said Hiatt. “That is the reason for the award. They have the ability not only to deliver information, but to do it in ways that are inspiring, motivating and clear.”

Taylor received a BYU Maeser Teaching Award in 1985 and he was a Fulbright professor at the University of Otago in New Zealand.

Gibb has taught at the center for more than 20 years. He has served as corporate counsel and secretary of Deseret Mutual Benefit Association since 1979.
