News Agency Executive to speak at symposium

    The chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of the Times Mirror Company, Mark H. Willes, will be the speaker at the Department of Communications Executive Symposium today at 11 a.m. in the de Jong Concert Hall of the Harris Fine Arts Center.

    The symposium is entitled “Re-igniting Newspaper Growth.”

    The Times Mirror Company is a Los Angeles-based news and information company that consists of three business segments: newspaper publishing, professional information and magazine publishing.

    Times Mirror also publishes leisure-oriented, special-interest magazines such as Popular Science and The Sporting News. The professional information sector of Times Mirror offers information and training to specialized markets.

    Before joining Times Mirror, Willes worked for 15 years at General Mills, Inc.,in Minneapolis, Minn. He served as president and chief operating officer from 1985 to 1992. He was named vice-chairman of the company in 1992.

    Willes previously worked for the Federal Reserve System beginning in 1969 where he worked as a president and first vice president.

    Willes’ started his career as an assistant professor of finance at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, from 1967 to 1969.

    Born and raised in Salt Lake City, Willes received his bachelor’s degree from Columbia College in New York City, and his Ph.D from the Columbia School of Business.

    Willes is married and is the father of five children.
