One of Broadway’s longest-running musicals will hit the Capital Theatre in Salt Lake City on Aug. 13 and play until Aug. 17.

“Grease!,” which has become one of the nation’s top selling records and top selling videos, will roll into town on Wednesday, giving Utahns a blast of ’50s nostalgia.

“Grease!” takes a look at growing up in the ’50s, when slicked-back hair, bowling, drive-ins, pajama parties and skin-tight pedal-pushers were the rage.

“Grease!” was made famous in 1978 with the major motion picture release of the Broadway musical. The movie starred John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John.

Written by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey, “Grease!” tells the story of Rydell High Schoolers Danny Zuko, leader of the Burger Palace Boys, and Sandy Dumbrowski, the wholesome, naive transfer student.

Unaware of the fact that they are both attending the same high-school, Danny and Sandy share their summer love memories with their classmates on the first day of school. Sandy, who has been befriended by the Pink Ladies, is surprised to learn that her sweet, tender lover-boy is the leader of the Burger Boys.

Upon their reuniting, Sandy is thrilled to find her summer love again. Danny, however, blows her off under the guise of being cool. The love story of Danny and Sandy gives for a comical and refreshing story line that has entertained millions.

“Grease!” has been a hit ever since its Broadway musical opening in 1972. The musical ran for 3,388 performances, becoming the fifth-longest running musical in Broadway history.

In late July “Grease!” reappeared at the top of the music charts as the second best-selling catalog album in America.

In 1996 a Megamix soundtrack version of “Grease!” was released, receiving months of Adult Contemporary radio air play and months on Billboard’s ’96-’97 charts.

The “Grease!” video, which has sold over 100,000 copies, has spent over 77 weeks in Billboard’s top video sales chart.

The latest revival on Broadway is playing to capacity crowds while Paramount prepares a 20th-anniversary re-release of the 1978 movie. The movie will receive promotional help from the film’s costars John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John.

The national touring company is returning to cities for the second and third visit.

Filled with such hits as “Greased Lightnin’,” “Summer Nights,” “Look at Me, I’m Sandra Dee” and “We Go Together,” “Grease!” is sure to give Salt Lake City five days of well-known entertainment.

“Grease!” will be at Salt Lake City’s Capitol Theatre for seven performances beginning today. Show times begin at 8 p.m. through Friday, 5 and 9 p.m. on Saturday and 2 and 7 p.m. on Sunday. Tickets are available at the Capitol Theatre box office and all ArtTix outlets. Tickets, which run between $19 and $37.50, can also be purchased by calling 355-ARTS.
