The Museum of Church History and Art in Salt Lake City is hosting the fourth international art competition, “150 Years of Pioneering.”

1997 marks the 150th anniversary of the arrival of the first pioneer company to the Salt Lake Valley.

“Artists creating work for the competition may memorialize the early pioneers or express how the spirit and faith of pioneering is reflected in their own or other Church members’ lives,” said Robert Davis, art curator for the museum, which is owned by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The competition is held every three years. The first competition, which was in 1987, had more than 800 entries, Davis said.

Most of the pieces purchased from the competition are collected to exhibit. Some are placed in prominent church buildings, Davis said.

The competition is open to all members of the church. Works of art must have been completed since Jan. 1, 1994. Contestants must send a photograph of the art work and an entry form to the museum by Nov. 25.

Twenty $500 merit awards will be presented during an awards ceremony in the Assembly Hall on Temple Square in March 1997. Twenty pieces will receive purchase awards for the value of the art.

According to a press release from Church headquarters, more than 1,500 entry forms have been sent to interested artists. Those who would like an entry form should write to the Museum of Church History and Art, 45 N. West Temple, Salt Lake City, UT, 84150-1003.
