The Employment Outlook Survey, conducted by Manpower Inc., reported that job opportunities have increased.

Michelle Vargas, Branch Manager for Manpower in Orem said that last year “24 percent increased their work force while 59 percent of companies remained stable, and 12 percent decreased their work force.”

“I think the fourth quarter has a higher percentage of hiring done,” Vargas said, “if you count all the companies moving into the area.”

The best jobs for BYU students now are in Customer Service at Stream International, which offers part-time employment and several different shifts, Vargas said.

Other jobs available include packaging, distribution and in-order entry, which requires bilingual skills.

“Manpower is a good way to get permanent work by networking at temporary jobs,” said James Spear from Colorado Springs, Colo., majoring in journalism.

Manpower hires for full- and part-time job-seekers. Compared to nonstudent residents, Vargas said, “there is an equal number, percentage-wise, of BYU students applying for jobs.”

Vargas said in a press release that “job opportunities are foreseen this fall in wholesale/retail trade, education and services. Public administration and transportation/public utilities employers plan cuts, while durable goods manufacturers voice mixed intentions.”

According to the press release, “during its 20-year history, (The Employment Outlook Survey) has been a significant indicator of employment trends and this survey reaches 16,000 public and private employers in 484 U.S. cities.”
