  1. Cougs to play final exhibition game

Coming off a 74-56 win over Trinity Western last Thursday, the BYU men’s basketball team turns their attention to Central Washington on Tuesday for its last exhibition game of the season. Tipoff is at 7:30 p.m. in the Marriott Center and will also be shown on BYU TV.

Jimmer Fredette led the Cougars with 24 points against Trinity Western and Jonathan Tavernari added 18, helping BYU to overcome a slow start and earn a convincing victory.

One pleasant surprise from last Thursday’s game was the emergence of freshmen Brandon Davies and Tyler Haws, who each scored six points and had a couple of exciting plays to energize the team.

“Our freshmen did well,” Fredette said. “They will help us out a lot.”

  2. Hall, Jorgensen named players of the week

BYU’s 52-0 rout of Wyoming on Saturday resulted in Mountain West Conference Player of the Week honors for two Cougars.

Quarterback Max Hall was named MWC Co-Offensive Player of the Week along with TCU quarterback Andy Dalton. Hall was almost perfect Saturday, completing 20 of his 22 passes to set a new MWC record for completion percentage in a single game (90.9 percent). Hall finished with 312 yards, a season-high four touchdowns, and no interceptions before being taken out of the game in the third quarter. The award is Hall’s fourth this season and eighth of his career.

BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall commented on his quarterback’s play during his press conference on Monday morning.

BYU has earned its right for the fifth consecutive year to play in the NCAA Women’s College Cup.

The NCAA announcement came on Monday night for the 64 teams chosen to compete, with BYU beginning its first round play Nov. 13 against UC Santa Barbara.

“We’re certainly excited to be a part of the NCAA tournament, the girls have worked hard all year,” coach Jennifer Rockwood said. “I know we’re anxious to get on the field after our loss to San Diego State and give it another go.”

This will be the first time BYU has played UC Santa Barbara, and with the recent loss at the MWC Championships, the players said they are eager to prove themselves.

If BYU beats UC Santa Barbara in the first round, it will face No.1 seed Stanford for round two on Saturday. BYU has faced Stanford before in 1998 and 2000, winning both of those games.

The biggest question after Saturday’s blowout win over Wyoming was whether the team should hand out more than one game ball.

Quarterback Max Hall and the BYU defense shared the spotlight as the Cougars defeated the Cowboys on the road in impressive fashion, 52-0.

The shutout is the first of the season for the Cougars — and also the second shutout of Wyoming in as many seasons.

The Cowboys were held to just 225 total yards and turned the ball over three times, including two interceptions by defensive backs Craig Bills and Brian Logan. The players took advantage of the inexperience of Wyoming’s Karsten Sween and Robert Benjamin, as the backup quarterbacks combined to go 1 for 4 passing for 5 yards, 2 interceptions and a quarterback rating of -64.5.

But even the great defensive effort couldn’t completely overshadow Max Hall.

  9. Men's swim team gets win over Seattle University

The men’s swim and dive team claimed victory over Seattle University with a final score of 184 – 108 on Friday.

Before the meet started, the team was affected by problems that cut the roster.

“We’ve had a little flu, a little sickness and a few injuries,” said associate head coach Stan Crump. “We didn’t swim a lot of kids tonight because of that, but the kids that were left competed really well.”

The meet started with a BYU win in the 200-yard medley relay. This was followed up by the 1000-yard freestyle where Hayden Palmer and Chad Fong gave BYU a first and second place finish, respectively.

John Kendrick took first place in the 500-yard and the 200-yard freestyle swims. Josh Tanner secured third place in the 200-yard freestyle. Jeff Ferrell won the 200-yard backstroke.

  10. Cougs take first in weekend swim meet

The BYU women’s swim and dive team came out on top in a four-way battle between New Mexico, Seattle University and Boise State on Friday. The final scores put BYU over New Mexico 234-65, Seattle University 241-52 and Boise State 199-99.

Rachel Grant, who did not compete in the 200-yard IM due to sickness, was able to take first place in the 100 and 200-yard Butterfly events, winning the 200 by more than six seconds.

“It’s the workouts that pay off, we work a lot on stroke and technique,” Grant said. “When we come out to meets we can just focus all our energy on what we learned in practice.”

Natasha Menezes took first place in the 200-yard freestyle and the 500-yard freestyle.
Michelle Menezes took first place in the 1000-yard freestyle and forth in the 500-yard freestyle.

  11. Cougars fall to SDSU in MWC finals

The BYU women’s soccer team ended its regular season with a disappointing second place finish in the MWC Championships after losing 1-0 to San Diego State on Saturday.

“The girls battled hard, I thought they gave it everything they possibly could have,” BYU coach Jennifer Rockwood said. “I really felt we played a good game, it just didn’t fall for us today.”

BYU (17-3-2) outshot the Aztecs 17-10, and both goalkeepers had six saves in a game where the majority of time was spent near the goals.

The game’s only goal came in the 28th minute on a shot from outside the goal box by SDSU’s Cat Walker.

“She had a great shot, there’s nothing you can do about it,” BYU defender Andrea Willis said. “We had a lot of opportunities to get that back and unfortunately it just didn’t roll our way today.”

  12. Women's basketball makes a statement

The women’s basketball team looked ready to start the season as it completed a weekend sweep of its exhibition games.

The team beat Westminster College on Friday 85-58 as the team shot over 56 percent from the field and hit 15 three-pointers. They jumped out to an early 15-4 lead in the first eight minutes and never looked back.

The Cougars were led by Haley Hall with 14 points and six rebounds as she made her debut after a season-ending ACL injury last year, her third such injury in a row. Stephanie Bates only saw nine minutes of play but made the most of it as she scored 11 points, nine of them off three pointers, which was good for second most on the team.

For Westminster, Nicole Yazzie was the only player scoring in double digits, finishing with 11 points. As a team, it shot 32 percent from the field and made only 8-of-30 three pointers.

  13. Cougars obliterate Cowboys: Notes on BYU-Wyoming game

BYU held Wyoming scoreless for the second straight year, and has outscored the Cowboys 96-0 in the last two games. The last opponent BYU shutout in consecutive years was Utah State in 1985 and 1986. The Aggies were also outscored 96-0 in those two games.

    I love the ’90s:
Entering Saturday’s game, only three Cougars had 90 or more yards receiving in a single game this season: Dennis Pitta (90 yards against Oklahoma), McKay Jacobson (111 yards against Florida State) and Luke Ashworth (91 yards against Utah State). On Saturday, two Cougars crossed the 90-yard barrier: Jacobson (100 yards) and J.J. Di Luigi (94 yards).

    Cougar up:
With Saturday’s win, BYU has 43 all-time wins against Wyoming, tied for the most Cougar wins against a single opponent. New Mexico and Utah State have also lost 43 times each against the Cougars. BYU plays at New Mexico on Saturday.

    Downright balmy:

  14. Dirty play taints BYU vs. UNM soccer game

    Eizabeth Lambert

Thursday night's matchup between the BYU and New Mexico womens' soccer teams got ugly, thanks mostly to Lobo soccer player Elizabeth Lambert. Lambert's actions were caught on camera several times, ranging from tripping an opponent to brutally yanking a BYU player to the ground by her pony tail. The national media has taken notice of the incident, and these highlights appeared on national sports analyst, Dan Patrick's Web site. (The highlight is about halfway down the page.)

Here's a press release found on the UNM Web site about last night's incident:
