Police Beat for June 28

FIRE

June 25: A car caught on fire near the north entrance of the Tanner Building. Witnesses said the car started to smoke and then they heard the tire pop. The cause of the fire is unknown but the fire department said other Ford Explorers have caught fire in the past. The taillight of the car next to the Explorer was melted.

GRAFFITI

June 25: Graffiti was found at the bus stop next to the law library. The phrase “There are angels among us” was written in black permanent marker.

THEFT

May/June: Sometime between May and June a digital video camera was stolen from an office in the Tanner Building.
June 14: Two bikes were reported stolen on campus. The victims saw the stolen bikes in a photo on Facebook. The person in the photo was arrested because he had “control” of the bikes.
June 16: Clothing was stolen from a laundry room at Wymount Terrace. The clothing is valued at $200.
June 16: A student left his backpack unattended in the Talmage Building while taking a phone call. When he came back the backpack was gone.
June 19: A female student reported the ignition key to her scooter was stolen. She thinks she may have left the key in the scooter. A locksmith came and re-keyed the scooter.
June 23: A juvenile attending a sports camp on campus was caught stealing headphones from the Bookstore. The juvenile was arrested and released to parents.
June 24: A backpack was reported stolen from a women’s restroom in the library. A female was taking a nap with her backpack next to her and when she woke up it was gone. No arrests have been made.

 

FIREARMS

June 16: Someone reported seeing a man in the stadium with a rifle. The police responded and found out it was a grounds employee sent to eliminate pigeons with a pellet gun. Officers stopped him. The man was not able to shoot any pigeons.
June 23: Officers responded to a report of seeing a man with a gun at 700 N. 900 East. They found several people shooting at each other with toy guns. The case was turned over to Provo City Police because it was in their jurisdiction.

 

BOMB THREAT

June 23: A BYU operator received a call from a juvenile from the Wilkinson Center courtesy phone stating there was a bomb. Police responded but could not find anyone. There were many EFY participants in the area. No bomb was found.
 

 

PUBLIC INTOXICATION

June 21: An intoxicated female was found in a parked car on campus. She was issued a citation for public intoxication and a friend came and picked her up. The female was not a student at BYU.
 

 

SUSPICIOUS ACTIVITY

June 16: On Bulldog Blvd. and 450 West passers-by flagged down officers, reporting that they had seen someone climbing in the rear window of a private residence. Officers investigated and found the person was a family member who lived there and had authorization to be in the home.
June 21: A person reported a suspicious male checking locked doors at Heritage Halls, specifically Robinson Hall. Police responded but no one was found.


ANIMAL PROBLEMS

June 18: A skinny brown snake was reported by the stairs at 800 N. 300 East. When police arrived, no snake was found.
June 20: A stray cat fell into a mechanical well and couldn’t get out. Officers responded and rescued the cat.
June 24: Concerned people reported someone chasing a duck around Maeser Hill with a motor scooter. Officers responded to the call and told the person not to harass ducks. The person complied.


LOST CHILDREN

June 18: A 10-year-old girl was found wandering in the WSC crying. She had wandered away from a sports camp and was returned.
June 18: Three children, ages nine, six, and three, were reported missing from their mother while on campus. The children had gotten separated and were found in their car by the Museum of Art.

Taking any property that is not yours is a crime — even if just temporarily using it such as taking a bike and riding it around campus.
