Baseball looking for first win

The first-game jitters are out, and the BYU baseball team is ready to redeem itself during this weekend’s series of games.

The Cougars (0-3) begin their second three-game series today against UC Davis in Davis, Calif. Because of the weather, the first game scheduled for Friday morning will be today, making Thursday a doubleheader.

The Cougars know just what it will take to be successful against the Aggies.

“We need to come out and have confidence,” outfielder Sean McNaughton said.

The players and coaches recognize the challenges facing the team. The team has been practicing indoors, so playing outside will take some getting used to.

Head coach Vance Law noted the team is young. The new players are not only getting used to a new team, but they are also getting used to playing at the Division I level.

One of the greater challenges the Cougars hope to overcome this season is lack of experience on the mound.

“I think everyone is trying to find their niche right now, especially on the mound,” Law said. “We don’t have very many returning guys with experience, and I think that’s our toughest challenge.”

So what will it take for the Cougars to have the confidence it takes to win?

“Being a little bit unsuccessful will help these guys recognize what we need to do in order to be successful. Learning from mistakes, especially for some of our young guys, and just the experience of being out there for the first time at a collegiate level will be a real plus for us,” Law said.
