Jazz riding winning streak after rough start

After a poor start to the season, a 100-97 win over the Detroit Pistons last Saturday gave the Utah Jazz their first winning record of the season.

The Jazz had a roster of only nine players, but efforts by its all-star players were enough to take the game into overtime then get the win. Andrei Kirilenko scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, and Deron Williams also notched a double-double with 14 points and 11 assists.

Boozer, who also had 22 points, had the strongest influence in the fourth quarter, hitting three consecutive 15-foot jump shots. Boozer also went 10-for-10 from the foul line.

“They were either doubling the point or they were just showing us so hard I was just left wide open,” Boozer said. “I’m confident in my shot, and I was just knocking them down.”

While some were concerned about the limited Jazz roster, Utah coach Jerry Sloan wasn’t worried.

“Players like to play, and it’s easier to play with less guys,” Sloan said. “They know they’re going to be on the floor a little bit longer, and they can play a little bit more relaxed.”

The Jazz are on a four-game winning streak that came at a time when fans least expected it. Last week the Jazz went on a road trip but had to play most of it without all-star Deron Williams, who returned to Salt Lake after the first game for a family situation.

Rookies Eric Maynor and Wesley Matthews stepped in, though, and led the team to wins.

The most important victory last week, though, came against the San Antonio Spurs in the AT&T Center in San Antonio. The Jazz got their first road win against the Spurs since 1999.

The victory marked the start of a six-game home stretch that will take place over the next two weeks.

The next two home games will be tonight against the Oklahoma City Thunder at 7 and Thursday against the Chicago Bulls at 8:30 p.m.
