BYU players broke several school and conference records in helping BYU fly over Air Force to victory.
Harvey Unga became BYU’s all-time leading rusher with a 4-yard carry in the first half, and Max Hall became BYU’s all-time leader in wins as a quarterback. Hall also set an MWC record for career passing yards. On the defensive side of the ball, Jan Jorgensen became the MWC all-time leader in tackles for loss.
“I’ve been lucky to be the coach the last five years with these types of young men, our results wouldn’t be possible without them,” BYU coach Bronco Mendenhall said. “Any success we’ve had should go first and foremost to the players.”
Unga nursed a sore ankle all week but was anxious to play as he needed just 21 yards to break the school rushing record. He finished with 67 yards on 11 carries and didn’t play most of the second half as a precaution.
The junior running back now has 3,268 career yards.
“It’s unbelievable, I love playing with [Unga],” quarterback Max Hall said. “To play with him is something I’ll always remember.”
Hall notched win number 30, passing Ty Detmer to become BYU’s winningest quarterback. With his 377 yards passing, Hall passed John Beck for second on the BYU all-time passing yards list and set a new MWC record for career passing yards at 11,039.
He also moved into second place all-time for BYU with his five touchdown passes, totaling 89 for his career.
“Max has been an unbelievable quarterback for this program, and the numbers don’t lie,” tight end Dennis Pitta said. “That’s pretty impressive considering the names he’s up against.”
Despite being mentioned with other Cougar greats like John Beck, Ty Detmer, Steve Young, Jim McMahon and Robbie Bosco, Hall still shrugs off the talk of numbers.
“I just want to finish my career the best I can,” he said.
