The thirst for Twilight

The vampires are back, and they’re more blood-thirsty than ever.

“The Twilight Saga: New Moon” is hitting theatres worldwide on Friday, and fans are more than ready.

The movie is based on the second book in the “Twilight” series written by Stephanie Meyer who received her B.A. in English at BYU.

In this segment, Bella Swan, played by Kristen Stewart, falls deeper into the perilous world of vampires.  The handsome vampire, Edward Cullen, played by Rob Pattinson, and his family, leave the town of Forks for Bella’s safety.

Bella’s heart sinks into deep depression, and she goes to high risks to be reunited with her one and only.  Werewolves, suspenseful action and shielded friendships take Bella on a race against time.

In an interview at Hotel Monaco in Salt Lake City, members of the cast revealed some of the movie’s magic.

Edi Gathegi plays Laurent, one of the three nomad vampires, and Jamie Campbell Bower plays Caius, a member of the Vulturi vampire coven that is determined Bella not leave Italy alive.

“It was the underlying love story that appealed to me,” Gathegi said. “It is dangerous, real and fundamentally true. She has fallen in love with a vampire.”

When asked by a high school “Twilight” blogger at the interview whether it is hard to play the bad guy role, Gathegi joked, “You don’t understand cause you’re so sweet. I’m not so sweet. It was fun to go to a darker place and explore that.”

Bower has plans to play Gellert Grindelwald in the upcoming “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” and has his own band.

“It is great to be involved in two cultural products, ‘Twilight’ and ‘Potter,’ that have started such a stir socially,” Bower said.

According to the two actors, Stephanie Meyer was on the film set quite a bit.

“The movie doesn’t deviate too far from the book,” Gathegi said.

"The difference between the first film and ‘New Moon’ is that action is taken to another level. The wolf pack and the Vulturi are introduced, which are both dangerous elements.”

The idea of vampires has started quite the phenomenon, branching out to books and TV shows like HBO’s True Blood and the CW’s Vampire Diaries.

“To be involved in a project with so much media attention, you have to step your game up,” Bower said. “You have to bring you’re A-game because there are more opportunities to play different people.”

The cast of “Twilight” has become one of entertainment media’s favorite targets.

“I feel incredibly sorry for Rob, Kristen and Taylor,” Bower said. “It is sad what they have to go through on a daily basis. I have met people who sit there and make up stories.”

Dakota Fanning, a new cast member to the saga, plays Vulturi vampire Jane, much to the disapproval of some fans. Some thought she was too famous for the part.

“When people read the books, they have a set vivid experience in their mind,” Bower said. “But there is nothing more terrifying than a sweet girl being incredibly evil.”

Most of the filming took place in Vancouver and Montepulciano, Italy.

“We would wake up every day at 4, sometimes even 2 in the morning,” Gathegi said. “We would drive to set and sit in a chair for three hours while they did our hair, contacts, and make-up.  The directors would then tell you where to stand and what to say. We would film for hours, and then get our make-up off and head to bed.”

The special effects and make-up played a big role in “New Moon,” and the actors seem excited to see the fans’ reactions to the film after months and months of hard work.

And it seems that they won’t be disappointed. Fandango.com has already reported “New Moon” as the best advance seller in the company’s history.

“’New Moon’ has a new onslaught of ‘twi-guys,’” Bower said. “I love the vampire world that Stephanie Meyer created. It feels more real to me.”
