Letter: Library love

Thanks for your article “Happily Ever After” on Thursday. I’m a graduate student, and this is my last semester.

Your article gave insight into why I haven’t married while at BYU. Apparently, instead of reading my textbooks in the library I was supposed to use them as props to smile coyly over in order to attract guys only interested in my outward appearance to ask for my number!

Oh! Too bad I didn’t read this article my freshman year! Then I could have understood that focusing on doing well in school would get in the way of my nuptial dreams.

It’s a new low, Daily Universe (albeit, an ironic one), when an article on protesting closing the Women’s Research Institute shares the front page with an article articulating the best use of the HBLL for female coeds.

Title: Good gravy,

I truly feel sorry for people who run around looking for reasons to be angry and indignant. They can't be happy. The article was innocuous. It was offered in good fun. Maybe it is dumb, but it doesn't embody the evil you claim. The fact that you've worked yourself up into a lather about it gives more insight as to why you haven't gotten married yet than anything else. If you are going to whine and moan, at least find something substantial and worthwhile to be sour about.

Title: Yep

Yep, welcome to BYU. However, you not being married is still your own issue.

Title: Unbelievable

Not having read the Daily Universe in a while, I turned to the editorials as it was my favorite section to read. I found this one and had a hard time believing that such an article could exist, but lo and behold, the article did, suggesting nearly the exact same tactics which Liann sarcastically mocks.

Who can forget such Pulitzer winning quotes such as “A lot of cute boys sit up on the fifth floor” as well as "Hey, you’re really pretty and it’s Friday night, do you have anything going on?" Truly we have all learned something today about the wonders of library flirting. But not studying.... that's silly.

Oh, give me a break. The library article was a funny feature that captured an interesting part of BYU culture. Not every article in any newspaper is designed to be a Pulitzer Prize-winner. The article does nothing to discourage studying in the library--nor does it do anything to discourage flirting. It's simply an observation of something that is happening. These complainers come off as nothing but whiney college students who want to assert superiority.
