It was two-and-done for the BYU women’s soccer team, which followed up its 2-0 first-round victory over UC Santa Barbara with a 2-0 loss to No. 1 Stanford in the second round on Saturday.
“It was an honor to be here and play Stanford,” BYU coach Jennifer Rockwood said in a statement. “I’m very proud of how hard our team played and the level at which we competed.”
The first goal by Stanford came in the initial 20 seconds of the game by junior Christen Press. The BYU defense, led by senior Andrea Willis, managed to hold Stanford to a 1-0 score until the last minute of the game, when Lindsay Taylor put in a rebound off a save by BYU goalkeeper McKinzie Olson.
Offensively, the Cougars managed 15 shots, and freshman Carlee Payne led the team with four shots. In return, the Cardinal had a total of 22 shots, less than their average of nearly 25 per game.
BYU ended its season with an 18-4-2 record, including three wins over top-25 opponents. The Cougars’ success has been seen both on and off the field.
TopDrawerSoccer.com recently named Andrea Willis to its Honorable Mention 2009 Team of the Season, while teammates Carlee Payne and Lindsi Lisonbee were named to the Web Site’s Freshman Team of the Season. Payne received the Mountain West Conference Freshman of the Year award, and Willis was also nominated for College Soccer Player of the Year by Soccer News Net.
