The No. 9 BYU women’s soccer team defeated the New Mexico Lobos 1-0 in the semifinals of the Mountain West Conference tournament Thursday at South Field.
Freshman Carlee Payne scored the Cougars’ only goal with 13 minutes left in the first half. Payne scored the goal off a header sent by junior Cassidy Shumway.
Shumway leads the team in shots and is second on the team in goals scored. BYU is led in goals by Payne, who is tied for first in the MWC in goals per game.
“Carlee has scored a lot of big goals, and this is probably the biggest so far,” BYU coach Jennifer Rockwood said.
Eighteen minutes into the first half, freshman Jessica Ringwood injured her ankle and was taken off the field. Ringwood did not return the rest of the game. Ringwood has three goals and three assists this season.
“We didn’t play as well as we wanted to,” goalie McKinzie Olson said. “That’s OK. A win’s a win. We’re excited about Saturday.”
The Cougars advance to play in the finals on Saturday against San Diego State at noon. The Aztecs defeated Utah in overtime 1-0 to advance to the finals.
The Aztecs are the only team in the conference the Cougars did not beat this year. The match, played in San Diego, ended in a 2-2 draw after two overtimes.
“We are pumped to play SDSU,” Payne said. “They’re tough. They want it, and we tied last time.”
The game on Saturday will be aired live on The Mtn. Tickets are now on sale online at www.byutickets.com.

So, what amounts to basic assault happens at the soccer game, and there's no mention of it in this article? Did the reporter not see it happen, or are the editors at the Daily Universe telling the reporter to ignore things like this.
I mourn the death of our fair, balanced, and once-respectable student newspaper.
How do you not mention the play of New Mexico's Elizabeth Lambert. Her actions have been shown on ESPN and many other national publications, but it's not mentioned on BYU's own paper?
