ByNow, family band, to play two Provo shows

By PARKER SMITH

Blending rock, jazz and classical piano music may seem as impossible as blending toothpaste and orange juice, but for band members who have spent their whole lives together, it isn’t so farfetched.

Adam Kaiser and his two sisters, Sarah and Rachel, have been playing their unique brand of music as ByNow for the last two years and will be playing two shows in Provo this weekend.

According to Sarah Kaiser, playing music with her siblings makes the process much easier.

“I just love playing shows with these guys,” she said. “When we’re on stage I’m comfortable. I don’t get nervous that they’re up there with me.  I wouldn’t want to do it by myself.”

The Kaisers grew up in a musical family and Sarah began writing her own music five years ago.
Adam Kaiser, who plays the drums, said it only seemed natural to form a band.

“Sarah started playing the songs that she wrote for us on the piano, and I was really impressed,” he said. “I first thought she could just do it on her own but I was like, ‘we should have a band.’”

The Kaisers started playing a few shows in Michigan before moving to Utah nearly a year ago.

According to Adam Kaiser, the band has played several shows since moving to Utah.

Each of the members of the band plays a key role in bringing different musical influences into the overall sound.

“We all kind of listen to different things,” Adam Kaiser said.

Rachel Kaiser said vocal harmonies and the lack of a guitar set ByNow apart from other alternative rock bands.

Each of the band members contribute lyrics to the songs inspired by everyday experiences and by each other.

“I found myself at the beginning writing songs about stuff that happened to Adam and Sarah,” Rachel Kaiser said.

For her sister Sarah, song writing is a personal experience.

“Every one of my songs is either about myself or somebody that I know, something they’ve gone through,” she said.

ByNow is currently working on an album to be released at the beginning of next year. Much of their music is on the group’s Myspace page.

The Kaisers say their plan is to make a career out of music and sign on to a record label in the near future.

“We would love to just be able to play music,” Adam Kaiser said.
