Elton John, Jim Carrey, Ricky Martin, Led Zeppelin, Louis Armstrong, facial exercises, The Chipmunks and the Raptor are all elements of a local comedian’s show to take place tonight.
Jason Hewlett is a Utah native who has gained recognition nationally for his one-man comedy routine. Danae Friel, marketing coordinator for the Covey Center for the Arts, said in a press release that Hewlett has done many high profile shows, most notably “Legends in Concert” in Las Vegas and also CBS’s “Jerry Lewis MDA telethon.” His show will be at the Covey Center for the Arts tonight at 7:30.
Hewlett is no stranger to Utah Valley and particularly BYU.
“I love BYU — have been a fan my whole life; my dad was a member of the Cougar Club during my childhood,” Hewlett said. “I went to the camps, including basketball and Young Ambassadors in high school and those made a huge impact on my life path. I attribute a lot back to BYU.”
Appealing to BYU students is the proximity of a Las Vegas-style comedy show to campus, also that the show is “G-rated.”
Hewlett started young in entertainment and has enjoyed making people laugh all his life. Interestingly, Hewlett was inspired to make entertainment his career by an experience at a BYU basketball camp.
“Coach Tony Ingle [an assistant BYU coach at the time], saw how entertaining I was and said … [that] I was okay at basketball, but he really wanted to have me around to make everyone laugh and then he said the sentence that changed my life, ‘You know, you could be a professional entertainer someday, you're that talented.’”
