Volleyball hits the road, tests two-game streak

Back at full strength, the BYU women’s volleyball team looks to ride a burst of confidence and a two-game win streak into a weekend road trip.

“Our goal is to win out the rest of the season. We’re taking it one game and one ball at a time,” said BYU head coach Shay Goulding.

The Cougars have recently been lifted by the return of senior right side hitter Kayla Walker and sophomore outside hitter Casey Thurston, who are both recovering from injury.

“It’s great that they are both feeling healthy, that they’re doing much better and that we can count on them,” Goulding said. “It’s nice to have our whole team playing together again.”

The Cougars (6-4) start the weekend in Fort Worth, squaring off against TCU (10-2). Despite an early-season three-set loss to the Horned Frogs, Goulding said she is confident in the Cougars’ lineup.

“TCU is on a roll and feeling good about themselves,” Goulding said of TCU’s current six-game win streak. “They are going to have their crowd behind them, but they are going to see a completely different team in us than they saw last time.”

TCU has been led by middle blocker Kourtney Edwards, who was named MWC co-player of the week for the week ending on Nov 1. On the week, the senior posted 2.50 kills, 1.25 blocks and 3.13 points per set, while posting a .514 hitting percentage.

Following Thursday’s match, the Cougars travel to Albuquerque on Saturday to face New Mexico and the other recipient of the MWC co-player of the week award. Middle blocker Anna Lehne, who received the honor for the first time this season, finished last week with 3.43 kills, 1.57 blocks and 4.29 points per set, while hitting .385.
