BYU law school students are getting a chance to take revenge on their professors in a role-reversal game show setting.
On Thursday, students will gather to watch professors get grilled at the annual “Stump the Professor” competition. The event will be in the Mott courtroom from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
For this event, students submit the most obscure and off-the-wall questions they can think of in an attempt to “stump” the people who usually have all the answers — their professors.
Eight professors (divided into two teams) compete against each other in a Jeopardy-like setting.
A question is read aloud and whichever team buzzes in first gets to answer the question. If neither team responds correctly, the student who submitted the question gets a prize.
Each $5 ticket buys you entrance to this event, the opportunity to submit two questions, pizza and drinks, said Shannon Allongo, co-chair for this event.
Shannon said the event is liberating for students.
“All year long our professors get to grill us,” Allongo said. “The fun of it for students is the role reversal.”
A few “stumping” questions from past events have been: “What is the name for the plastic end pieces on shoelaces?” and “Which BYU law professor is on Wikipedia?”
Questions from last year focused on law school, area of law, literature, sports, music, media and theater arts, and stuff most lawyers don’t know.
Professors have impressed their audiences in the past with this diverse knowledge.
“What you wouldn’t believe is the questions they do get!” said Autumn Begay, event co-chair. “Like the question about Hannah Montana last year.”
“Stump the Professor” is an annual event hosted by the BYU Women’s Law Forum to raise money for the Women and Children in Crisis shelter.
This event benefits a good cause, and provides a good time, said Jim Gordon, the emcee.
“The students have the opportunity to contribute to a worthy cause, the Center for Women and Children in Crisis,” Gordon said. “Also, the event helps faculty and students to laugh together and for students to see their professors in an entertaining situation.”
Tickets will be sold in the Fishbowl of the BNSN.
