I love going to BYU games and standing and cheering just as hard as the next loyal fan. It’s great to see everybody get excited and support our Cougars. What I don’t like seeing, however, is the careless use of “boo.”
An important factor in considering what I have to say is that, as a general rule, I am “anti-boo.” I know we want to intimidate our opponents, but it’s really just plain mean — classless, even. I just think that, I don’t know ... maybe actually beating the other team is much more effective. Oh well. I understand and appreciate the fact that the “boo” is never going to go away. There are worse things we could be doing.
Assuming the “boo” is here to stay, we may as well learn to use it properly, don’t you think? I believe the “boo” would be much more effective if we used it with greater care. BYU fans, please stop booing after every single call that goes against our team!
Believe it or not, sometimes our players do commit pass interference in the red zone or initiate too much body contact on an otherwise beautiful block in the key. The problem with booing too often is that, when a bad call does happen, the referees are already upset with a crowd that doesn’t seem to know the rules anyway. Let’s try to use better judgment and instead expend the majority of our energy actually cheering for our own team.

I absolutely agree with complaints towards those who seem to boo on every play. But I am also a strong proponent of venting frustration at referees for bad calls, opposing players for poor sportsmanship, and even our own coaches for gutless play calling with a hearty boo.
Brad Johnson is a man among boys. Thank you for pointing out one of the biggest flaws in BYU sports. The few of us who actually understand sports and practice appropriate booing etiquitte are tired of being drowned out by ignorant booing. These are the same people who think the other team pass interferes on every play, and who routinely say things like, "do you have to have one or two feet in for a catch in college?," and "are there four quarters or two halves in football?" Or my favorite: "Pass the ball!! Why are we running it?! We can't score unless we pass!" I often wonder how these people end up at football games. If this person is you, in the future we would all be better off if you just didn't come, or gave your tickets to a mute.
Especially when there is no reason to boo. I was at the cougar game two weeks ago, and the kid in front of me suffered from this horrible disease (the need to boo).
He booed when the refs called an "offical review." Why would you boo? That's something we WANT in football. If my opponent appears to have stepped out--I WANT the officials to look it over. Who cares?
But no, he booed. He even booed when the other team called a time out (again, who knows why)...sigh, frankly, I'm tired of it too.
BYU fans really fail to appear classy when attending games.
Actually, timeouts are about the only time i would boo. That's one of the stupidest parts of football, where the last 2 minutes of the first half last over 10 minutes. Yes, it's a tactical choice, but it's still stupid and should be disallowed.
BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!
