Championship title on the starting line

Two of BYU’s most dominant sports teams will compete for conference titles on Halloween, and fans won’t have to travel very far or pay any money to see them.

The BYU men’s and women’s cross country teams will compete tomorrow at the Mountain West Conference Championships at Cascade Golf Course in Orem.

The men’s team, ranked No. 7 in the nation, looks to win its 10th MWC championship.

Although they are the favorites to win, they are expecting tough competition from Air Force and New Mexico.

“The competition will be very close,” said Ed Eyestone, BYU men’s cross country head coach. “Air Force is always tough and New Mexico has several athletes with talent that can do a lot of damage. They’ve battled some injuries this year, but they are coached well and we refuse to take them lightly. We will have to give it our all to win this race.”

The Cougars are led by sophomore Miles Batty, who has been BYU’s top runner in every race this year. Brandon Hebbert, Richard Nelson, Ryan Merriman, Tommy Gruenewald, Alden Bahr, Nate Ogden, Travis Fuller, Jonathan Nelson, Jon Kotter, Jared Rohatinsky and Dylan Shawhan will also run for the Cougars.

The No. 21 women’s team will compete for its ninth MWC championship. Last year, they lost to New Mexico by just two points.

“New Mexico is really good once again and Colorado State has the talent to make things interesting,” said Patrick Shane, BYU women’s cross country head coach. “We have worked really hard to put ourselves in a position to win conference and I’m pleased with the effort and attitude the team brings to achieve our goals. It should be a very tight race.”

Junior Cecily Lemmon-Lew has been the leader for the Cougars this year, owning MWC season-best records for the 5K and 6K races. Angela Wagner, Katy Andrews, Lacey Cramer, Lisa Drury, Sarah Edwards, Sarah Frey, Rachel Lange, Michaelanne Laurent, Nicole Nielsen, Ashlee Thomas and Sarah Yingling will also compete.

The races begin at 10 a.m. near the Cascade Golf Course clubhouse at 1313 E. 800 North. Admission is free.

“We want to invite the student body to be at Cascade Saturday morning,” Shane said. “The weather is projected to be good and the course is very spectator-friendly. We could use all of the cheering and voices we can to help propel us to victory.”

This will be both teams’ last competition before heading to the NCAA Mountain Region Championships in New Mexico.

Title: Why?

Why do you and byucougars.com lump the mens and womens cross country and track team together? They are two different teams competing at two different levels. You don't combine articles on mens and womens basketball, why do so for cross country?
