Velour's 'Dead Ball' to headline three bands

 By BEKAH DEMORDAUNT

Halloween in Provo is made up of a couple hundred Halloween parties with couples or roommates with elaborately planned costumes. However, the crew at Velour is ensuring live music fans have a place to go with a costume in tow.

Velour will be hosting three headliners Saturday night for their Halloween Ball, which is also being called the Dead Ball. Neon Trees, the Elizabethan Report and The Brobecks will all perform. This is the first Halloween Ball being held at Velour, which is replacing the traditional Monkey Grinder theatrics held at Velour for the past four years.

The Monkey Grinder show was an old time circus-like theatrical show complete with peg-legged pirates, fire breathers and men on stilts. However, after Monkey Grinder band members started moving out of Utah Valley, Velour owner Corey Fox knew that in order to replace the tradition it had to be pretty epic.

“If anyone could replace the Monkey Grinders we thought it would be the Neon Trees, the Elizabethan Report and The Brobecks, which are all headliners,” Fox said.  “Three headliners on the same show, it should be a big show!”

This event marks the first time the Neon Trees will play in Provo since they signed with major record label Mercury Records.

Fox also said because there is such a reputation to live up to with this Halloween Ball, costumes are required. In fact, Fox himself will be donning a surprise get-up for the night’s festivities. Dressing up is strongly encouraged and will be rewarded.

“We were bold enough to advertise costumes required,” Fox said. “We are trying to keep to the tradition set by the Monkey Grinder shows, being so elaborate, everybody in costume . . .  Again we are trying to keep that tradition of people really dressing up for the show.”

This Halloween Ball will be more fun and high energy than Halloween shows in the past because the bands playing are such high energy dance bands, he said.

Tickets for the Halloween Ball will only be sold at the door for $7 and Fox encourages people to arrive early, as the show is expected to reach capacity. The show begins at 8 p.m. at Velour, located at 135 N. University Avenue.
