Fans will have their first chance to see the BYU men’s basketball team at the Papa John’s Cougar Tipoff tonight at 7 in the Mariott Center.
The Tipoff is an annual event that features a full-length scrimmage, free posters and autograph signing. The men’s team will play a full game, and the women’s team will be introduced and participate in a two-ball competition at halftime.
Here is a breakdown of the 2009-2010 BYU men’s basketball roster:
Guards
Jackson Emery, junior, 6-3, 185. Averaged 7.8 points per game, 3.8 rebounds per game, 3.0 assists per game and 1.4 steals per game last year. Emery was named to the MWC All-Defensive Team last season. This year he has been named a team captain by his teammates. Emery will be a strong leader with his sharp outside shooting, defense and hustle.
Jimmer Fredette, junior, 6-2, 195. Averaged 16.2 ppg, 4.1 rpg, 3.0 apg and 1.5 spg last year. Fredette was on the MWC First Team last season. This year he has been named MWC Preseason Player of the Year, and will probably be the team’s go-to-guy because of his competitiveness and ability to score.
Lamont Morgan Jr., senior, 5-10, 170. Averaged 3.6 ppg, 1.8 apg and 1.4 rpg last year. This year, Morgan has been named a team captain by his teammates. He will be an important reserve with his excellent ball-handling and up-tempo style.
Michael Loyd Jr., sophomore, 6-1, 170. Averaged 2.0 ppg, 1.2 apg and 0.9 rpg as a true freshman in the 2007-08 season. Loyd redshirted last season as a sophomore. This year, he looks to bring his athleticism and improved shooting touch together to help the team.
Swingmen
Jonathan Tavernari, senior, 6-6, 215. Averaged 15.7 ppg, 7.2 rpg, 1.8 apg and 1.5 spg last year. Tavernari has been named to the MWC Third Team twice. He spent this last summer playing for the Brazilian National Team with NBA players Leandro Barbosa and Anderson Varejao. The Cougars will be counting on his three-point shooting and strong physical play.
Charles Abouo, sophomore, 6-5, 210. Averaged 2.9 ppg, 1.9 rpg and 0.4 apg per game last year.
Abouo spent this last summer playing for the Ivory Coast National Team. He will be competing for a starting role with his athleticism and solid defense.
Tyler Haws, freshman, 6-5, 200. Averaged 23.6 ppg, 8.3 rpg and 2.7 apg last year for Lone Peak High. Haws is only the second player in Utah history to have been named Mr. Basketball twice.
With his great shooting ability and high energy, it will be hard for coach Dave Rose to keep Haws off the court.
Brock Zylstra, freshman, 6-6, 205. Averaged 22 ppg, 12 rpg, 3 spg and 1 bpg as a senior at Bonita High in La Verne, Calif. Zylstra recently returned from his mission in New Zealand. His good size and all-around game will keep him competitive for playing time.
Forwards
Noah Hartsock, sophomore, 6-8, 215. Averaged 2.4 ppg and 2.3 rpg last year. Hartsock made a name for himself with a couple of strong games near the end of the season. This year he will compete for a starting spot.
Logan Magnusson, junior, 6-6, 210. Averaged 8.3 ppg, 5.6 rpg and 3.5 apg last year for Salt Lake Community College, which won the 2009 NJCAA Division I National Title. Magnusson will add experience and an all-around game to the team.
Brandon Davies, freshman, 6-9, 230. Averaged 14 ppg and 6 rpg last year for Provo High. Davies is an athletic scorer with lots of potential.
Centers
Chris Miles, senior, 6-11, 235. Averaged 7.1 ppg, 4.0 rpg and 1.3 apg last year. Miles bulked up and refined his offensive game during the off season, and he’ll look to continue to fill his role as BYU’s prominent post player.
James Anderson, sophomore, 6-10, 230. Averaged 2.5 ppg and 1.6 rpg last year. This year Anderson looks to refine his athleticism to become a consistent contributor for BYU.
