As if BYU’s win over Oklahoma wasn’t big enough, the Cougars’ subsequent jump in the rankings has put them at the same level as the country’s elite teams.
BYU leaped 11 spots from No. 20 to No. 9 in Tuesday’s updated AP poll. The Cougars are no strangers to the top 10, having reached as high as No. 8 last season.
The Cougars were ranked No. 12 in the USA Today Coaches' Poll.
Along with the top-10 ranking, both the Walter Camp Football Foundation and the Mountain West Conference named quarterback Max Hall as Offensive Player of the Week.
“We have a lot of talent on this team and the coaches put together a great game plan for Oklahoma,” Hall said in an interview with ESPN about the national award. “This award is a result of a great team effort."
Hall completed 26-of-38 passes with two touchdowns and two interceptions against the Sooners. The experienced senior crafted what ended up being the winning drive, completing 9-of-11 passes for 74 yards, including a clutch 23-yard fourth-down pass to Dennis Pitta and 7-yard touchdown pass to McKay Jacobson with 3:03 left on the clock.
Hall’s teammate, Andrew Rich, was honored by the MWC as Defensive Player of the Week. Rich had five tackles, one tackle for a loss, and he forced two fumbles. BYU’s defense allowed just 265 total yards to OU.
BYU was also named the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl National Team of the Week, an award given to the best team performance each week of the season.
