Utah Symphony shows patriotism at SCERA Shell

Spotted around the Provo and Orem area less than once a year, Utah Symphony will pack up their rock stops and bows to come down from Salt Lake City for a casual outdoor concert.

The SCERA Shell will host Utah Symphony on June 25 at eight p.m. to start Fourth of July celebrations.

The concert, titled “Under the Stars…and the Stripes,” will include numbers from various composers to highlight the holiday. The show will include songs such as Copland’s prelude for World War Two troops, Tchaikovsky’s well-known “1812 Overture,”  the Star Wars soundtrack medley and the Indiana Jones theme song.

April Berlin, SCERA public relations manager, said she is looking forward to this concert because Utah Symphony seldom performs in the Provo area.

“Utah Symphony rarely comes to Utah County,” Berlin said, “They usually tour around the state and the world, so it is an easy way to get to the symphony since it is close.”

Utah Symphony performed in Wyoming, Idaho and in European countries Austria and Germany. Every other year for the last decade Utah Symphony performed at the SCERA. Although they take their strings far distances, Utah Symphony plays locally to provide people with access to cultural activities.

Hilarie Ashton, public relations manager for Utah Symphony | Utah Opera, said she hopes families will come Monday night so children have a chance to see a symphony perform.

“It’s a unique opportunity for the whole family to enjoy live classical music together, because mom and dad don’t have to worry about getting everyone dressed up and the kids don’t have to worry about sitting still for two hours,” Ashton wrote in email.

With symphony performances generally costing four times more and requiring a formal dress code, “Under the Stars… and the Stripes” makes it easier for parents to expose their children to classical music.

“On a Monday night it’s a great opportunity to expose your children to symphonic arts,” Berlin said.

The show hosted at the SCERA’s outdoor venue will create a different type of music experience.

“The fresh, non-restrictive environment that outdoor concerts create can make an already beautiful piece of music more enjoyable for some people in a really unique way,” Ashton said, “It’s a flawless way to blend nature with art.”

The concert will consist of the following songs:

“The Star Spangled Banner” by John Stafford Smith/Francis Scott Key

“Fanfare for the Common Man” by Aaron Copland

“Armed Forces Salute

“Colonel Bogey March” by Kenneth Alford

“Music for Royal Fireworks” by George Frideric Handel

“South Pacific Symphonic Scenario” by Rodgers and Hammerstein

“Main Title from Star Wars Suite for Orchestra” by John Williams

“Raiders March” by John Williams

“1812 Overture” by Peter Tchaikovsky
