The BYU women’s tennis team takes to its home courts to play its second West Coast Conference opponent, the University of San Francisco, on Saturday.
After spending almost a month on the road, the team is happy to be home.
BYU coach Lauren Jones-Spencer is happy to be home as well and off the road.
“It’s definitely nice to be on our home courts,” Jones-Spencer said. “It was a rough three weeks. It’s hard on the road being away, but I think the girls handled it well.”
San Francisco will come to Provo after playing Utah State in Logan on Friday.
Last time the Cougars and the Dons met, BYU came away with a 7-0 sweep, but the team isn’t taking a win for granted. They know San Francisco has good coaches and a good team.
“We’re going to take every match the same — come in and play our game,” Jones-Spencer said. “We’re not going to take anyone lightly.”
BYU and San Francisco will face off on the outdoor tennis courts Saturday at 11 a.m. Admission is free and pizza will be provided.
After a bye week, the men’s tennis team is eager to start its conference play in California this weekend against top-ranked Santa Clara and San Francisco teams.
BYU coach Brad Pearce said the team’s break in the season couldn’t have been more timely.
“Mentally, physically and emotionally it was a perfect time to have a break and recharge our batteries,” Pearce said.
Both Santa Clara and BYU are looking to extend their win streaks. BYU (10-5) has won its last seven matches and Santa Clara (13-3) has won its last six. With both teams having so much momentum the Cougars said they are expecting a battle.
On Saturday the team will take on its second West Coast Conference foe. San Francisco has struggled to find its footing this season, but the Cougars don’t see that as a reason not to come out to the match with everything they’ve got.
“Every team is dangerous,” Pearce said. “We’ve got to be ready to play.”
Sophomore Patrick Kawka said the team is excited to start conference play and having this week to rest and refocus will be beneficial.
“There’s so many good teams in this conference so it’s a great chance for us to become a top-ranked team and go to the NCAA [Championships],” Kawka said.
On Friday, BYU and Santa Clara play at the Degheri Tennis Center at 3 p.m. PST and Saturday’s match will be at the California Tennis Club in San Fransisco at 2 p.m. PST.
