Air Force was no match for BYU as the men’s swim and dive team won handily 180-120 on Friday. However, the men’s and women’s teams lost to Denver, the men losing 192.50-107.50 and the women 158.00-142.00, on Saturday.
Prior to the meet against Air Force, head coach Tim Powers said in a news release that “our guys will definitely have to be on their game.” The men proved that they were Friday night.
Jordan Fletcher earned himself three first-place finishes. To start things off, the 200 medley relay team of Fletcher, Brady Wells, David Armstrong and Garret Beaman took first place with a time of 1:32.21. Fletcher’s next first-place win came in the 100 backstroke as he touched in with a time of 50.85. With a time of 49.93 in the 100 butterfly he had his third victory of the night.
After the Jan. 6 meet against Arizona State, diver Brandon Watson said he knew he could keep getting better and has remained consistent throughout the season.
The divers swept both the 1-meter and 3-meter boards. Watson dominated the 1-meter with a score of 377.18 and later the 3-meter with a score of 384.08. Travis Day took second place on the 1-meter, scoring 288.97, and took third on the 3-meter with a score of 316.27. Kevin Dreesen scored 277.72 on the 1-meter, earning himself third place, and on the 3-meter he took second with a score of 322.28.
Despite both the men’s and women’s teams losing to Denver, there were promising moments.
The meet started off well as the women’s 200 medley relay team of Hailey Campbell, Kassy Bispo, Kim Welch and Taryn Toolson took first with a time of 1:43.79. Welch would also take first in the 200 butterfly with her time of 2:04.99.
The 200 medley relay team of Fletcher, Wells, Armstrong and Beaman took third with a time of 1:31.92, missing second place by a mere hundredth of a second. Fletcher continued on with his successful weekend by taking second in the 100 back, touching in with a time of 50.45.
Diving was not a problem against Denver as Dayan Christensen took first on the women’s 1-meter with a score of 267.55 and teammate Haley Francois took second with a score of 259.40. Francois also took second on the 3-meter with a score of 275.10.
Watson swept the men’s 1-meter and 3-meter boards, scoring 344.55 on the 1-meter and 395.85 on the 3-meter. Day took third on the 1-meter with his score of 302.10 and Dreesen took second on the 3-meter with a score of 361.95.
The Cougars next compete at home against Utah on Jan. 27.
