Utah County Fair features bull riding

For the first time, professional bullriding will be featured in this year’s Utah County Fair, which is scheduled to take place at the Spanish Fork Fair Grounds.

“Everyone has county fairs, but Utah County’s fair is focused on the county’s produce, which is mainly agriculture,” said Julie Blaney, the fair’s director. “It consists of a showcase of excellence from Utah County.”

Hundreds of people go to the fair to enjoy the company and atmosphere.

“Right from crocheting and fine arts down to music is the best showcase ever, and I am excited,” Blaney said.

The fair is scheduled to take place from Aug. 17-20 and admission to most events is free.

The professional bullriding, however, is not free. The price is $8 for adults and $6 for children but free for children under two.

“The fair has already been paid for by taxpayers,” Blaney said. “By coming to it, people will support it and help it to be self-sustaining.”

Blaney said there will be food vendors. She said people should just show up and have fun. There is a free rodeo and country dancing at night for anyone interested.

“People should come have a good time,” Blaney said. “That is why the fair is going on.”

Among the many showcases in the fair is the FMX stunt riders.

“We are doing the freestyle motocross halftime for the derby,” said Jason Braithwaite, a student from BYU studying biology. “I do it for a job, and we have three or four riders in the fair this year.”

Braithwaite said it is dangerous, but it is a lot of fun. He has been doing it all his life.

“We ride dirt bikes,” Braithwaite said. “We go 30 feet high in the sky. The price is $10, and the ticket can be purchased at any Maceys grocery store in the county.”
