Campus Cable to add lineup of ESPN channels

ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN News will return to BYU’s campus cable this fall and will be available to students in BYU housing and throughout campus.

BYU University Communications announced Tuesday the ESPN network stations will be replacing The Mtn., NASA and CBS College Sports TV starting in early August. With 10 BYU football games set to be broadcast on the ESPN family of networks this season, it was necessary for campus cable to bring back the ESPN network to campus.

“As this season starts out, the thing that I’m really the most excited about … is the fact that the first five games are going to be on ESPN or ESPN2, and eight games next year already, right from the get-go will be on ESPN or ESPN2,” said ESPN Vice President of Programming David Brown at BYU Football’s Media Day. “That stacks up with just the top echelon of the sport, in terms of number of national telecasts.”

 

 

 

 

With BYU set to be featured on ESPN’s family of networks starting this season and running through 2018, BYU’s national television exposure will be similar to Notre Dame’s success on NBC, and the SEC’s partnership with CBS and ESPN.

“Our goal is to televise BYU for as long as we can. BYU is a great brand,” Brown said. “When all the statistics come out, this will put BYU right at the top of the heap.”

BYUtv will compliment ESPN, ESPN2, ESPN U and ESPN News for complete Cougar football coverage this season around campus. Head coach Bronco Mendenhall acknowledged at BYU’s media day that the BYU brand, along with BYUtv, are key components that will help bring success in BYU’s venture into independence.

“If the other 119 Division I football coaches just came and sat in these chairs today, I’d bet everyone would be wishing, ‘I wish we had our own TV station’,” Mendenhall said. “It’s impressive and it’s unprecedented and that’s what’s helping us do this.”

Cougar fans around campus will also be able to enjoy BYU basketball games broadcast on ESPN in the upcoming season.

“We feel very positive about where we’re going with the West Coast Conference and how our sports, particularly basketball being on ESPN again will have more opportunities for exposure and access to our fans,” BYU athletic director Tom Holmoe said. “The fact is this will benefit our basketball team and all our other Olympic sports.”

· ESPN2 will replace CBS College Sports TV on IPTV channel 35 and cable channel 6

· ESPN News will replace NASA on IPTV channel 18 and cable channel 26

· ESPNU will continue to be broadcast on IPTV channel 37 and cable channel 33
