June 11 Someone reported the theft of their digital recorder from a location in the Richards Building. It has not been recovered.

June 12 A cell phone was reported stolen at the Auxillary Maintenance Building on campus. An investigation is ongoing.

Disturbance

June 8 A loud verbal dispute caused a Wymount resident to call BYU police to investigate. Upon arrival, the officers determined the situation as calm and that there was no threat.

Provo Police

June 13 The Provo Police Department conducted what they call “Knock and Talks” at local hotels and motels. Thirty-three officers focus on eight local businesses and spread out to gather information for this operation.

“With each operation we have, our goal is to work with citizens to improve quality of life issues. We instructed our officers to locate problems and to solve them,” a message on the department’s website said.

The entire operation lasted three hours, with officers covering the focus area in the evening on Thursday from 6-9 p.m.

During the operation, the officers made 120 contacts, which resulted in one DUI and drug possession arrest, one drug paraphernalia arrest and five warrants — three adult probations and parole fugitive warrants, one disorderly warrant and one cash-only warrant.

Disorderly Conduct

June 7 Police responded to a report of seeing juveniles running and fighting in the area of the Wilkinson Center just before 5 p.m. No one matching the description was found in the area.

Suspect Arrested for Two Counts of Sexual Battery at Provo Recreation Center

Provo police investigators responded to a call at the Provo Recreation Center on an sexual battery allegation on Saturday, June 8, at approximately 4:50 p.m.

A 13-year-old girl told a lifeguard that a stranger touched her inappropriately while she was swimming in the pool. Later, a second victim came forward and stated that the same man had a touched her in the same manner.

The two young victims identified the alleged suspect, who was later booked into the Utah County Jail for two counts of sexual battery. Since the arrest, two more girls came forward with similar reports.

Police reports state the suspecct said he had been unsuccessful with dating recently, which he said prompted him to act as he did.

Lt. Matt Siufanua told the Daily Herald that the girls responded exactly as they should have by going immediately to a lifeguard.

“Teach your children not to talk to strangers,” Siufanua said. “There is no reason why a 38-year-old man should be having a casual conversation with a 13-year-old girl if he doesn’t know her.”

The Provo police believe there may be more victims. Detectives are asking anyone with information regarding what happened to these girls or anyone else to call Provo police detectives at 801-852-6210.

The search for 22 year-old BYU student Tyler Mayle, who has been missing for five days, continued Wednesday as his family prepares to say goodbye to his younger sister, who is scheduled to enter the Missionary Training Center.

Mayle, who has not been seen since leaving around 10:30 a.m. Saturday when he left for a day hike on Y Mountain, is a communications and political science major who works at BYU Radio.

<img class="size-medium wp-image-322405" alt="Father Gary, mother Lori, and sister Hannah talk with reporters regarding Tyler Mayle, who went missing this past weekend. (Photo by Elliott Miller)

Mayle’s parents, Gary and Lori Mayle, arrived in Provo on Tuesday from Windsor, Colo. to aid in the search for their son. Returning from the mountain to speak to the media at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Gary Mayle expressed confidence in the efforts of the 50 to 60 people actively involved in finding his son.

“They’re on the right track,” Gary Mayle said. “They are using my phone on the mountain to coordinate information they received from Tyler’s phone pings.”

The last ping from Tyler’s phone came on Tuesday around 6 p.m., which authorities believe came from a location south of the Y on the mountain face – a place known for steep terrain dropping off to a river.

Tyler is an Eagle Scout and an avid hiker. His father said it was not unusual for Tyler to take off for day hikes alone and to sometimes deviate from the trail to “find new areas.”

Tyler’s younger sister, Hailey, recently received a mission call and was scheduled to report to the MTC Wednesday afternoon.

“We think she will enter at her scheduled time,” said Hannah, 17, the youngest of the Mayle children. “She was given the option of waiting, but she has a lot of faith that the right things will happen . . . (and) that she should continue as planned.”

BYU student Tyler Mayle has not been seen since he left Saturday morning for a hike on Y Mountain.

Tyler’s mother knew something wasn’t right on Tuesday morning after trying for two days to text, call and Facebook message Tyler to arrange for Hailey’s pick-up from the airport Tuesday night.

“When I didn’t hear him on the radio on Monday, I thought maybe they had switched things around — they do that sometimes,” she said.” I texted him and said, ‘Hey, I didn’t hear you on the radio today,’ but he didn’t text back. I thought maybe he had lost his phone.”

“I had a friend from Springville go by his apartment and check on Tuesday morning,” she added. “When I didn’t hear him on the radio for the second day in a row and his roommates and friends had not seen or heard from him, I got worried. That’s when I called the authorities.”

Tyler’s father explained that it was normal for the family not to be concerned about his whereabouts on a daily basis since he was 22 years old and has been living on his own for almost four years, having served a two-year mission in Germany. He said roommates couldn’t have known anything was wrong since Tyler’s daily habits and hours of coming and going were constantly changing.

Lori Mayle said her son is a fighter and that she doesn’t yet know what the outcome of the search might be.

“The authorities know their job and I am relying on my faith that God’s in charge,” she said. “It may not be that things work out the way that I want them to, but I have faith in God’s plan.”

When asked what his feelings were when looking up at Y Mountain, knowing his son was up there somewhere, Gary Mayle paused before answering, “I feel overwhelmed.”

“If anyone saw a hiker on Saturday that was off the trail and matched Tyler’s description . . .or if anyone saw Tyler on the trail, please make a phone call to the Provo authorities,” he said. “We’re going to stay with it until we bring our son home.”

Theft

May 14 A female reported her wallet had been stolen from the perimeter on the fourth floor of the Harris Fine Arts Center. She reported that someone has already been using the card. An investigation is ongoing.

May 29 Police received a call from residents at Wymount Terrace reporting that someone stole a catalytic converter from their 2009 Toyota while it was parked at their residence. Lieutenant Lemmon of the University Police explained that this type of theft wave comes and goes.

“There’s a market for them to sell them quickly,” Lemmon said.

Disorderly

May 30 Two females who appeared to be a mother and daughter told a driver in a BYU parking lot that she could not park in the open space because they were saving it for someone else to park in. The driver told the two women she intended to park there anyway since saving parking spaces wasn’t allowed. The two women then threatened to “key” the driver’s car while she attended a high school graduation on campus. Police were called and the suspects fled on foot. The case is still active.

May 30 Police were dispatched after receiving a call that eggs were being thrown from a car near the Smith Fieldhouse. When the officers arrived and interviewed witnesses, they were told that the objects thrown were actually water balloons being hurled out the window of a car by occupants in a vehicle near the intramural practice field.

Identity Fraud

May 29 A male student called University Police to complain that someone had stolen his photograph and was using his identity to post sexually explicit ads with his name on Craigslist. The ads posted contact information for the complainant and he said he was being bombarded with unwanted contact. The case is being investigated further.

Criminal Mischief

May 15 A male skateboarder was stopped by a University Officer for riding on a sidewalk where skateboards are not allowed. The suspect refused to sign his citation and fled on his board.

May 25 A fire was reported in Wymount Terrace. Upon arrival, officers discovered it was a cooking fire. Someone had left food on the stove and it boiled over and set off the fire alarm. Nobody was injured.

May 29 The same male skateboarder who had been stopped by an officer and cited on May 15 was spotted again in violation of the city ordinance regarding skateboarding. He was commanded to stop, but failed to respond. The officer had the suspect’s phone number from the May 15 incident and called him to come into the station. Police have a summon for his arrest. He will be charged with the city citation for skateboarding and failing to stop on the command of a peace officer.

Assault

May 28 A woman called University Police to report an altercation between two males in the parking lot of the Student Health Center. She explained that the men were fighting and that one of the vehicles appeared to have damage. The caller wrote down the license plate number of one vehicle before they both got back in their cars and sped away. When officers contacted the owner of that vehicle they discovered that he was the victim in the incident and that it had begun with a “road rage” exchange. The driver of the other vehicle is still being sought.

Harassment

May 24 A male student called University Police to report that a female was being harassed because of the color of her skin and her religion by somone on the street. No suspects were found and the caller didn’t know the girl’s last name.

Police Beat Tip:

University Police advise students with stolen bikes, computers and iPads to visit online to see if they can find their item being sold.

“We’ve had problems with the stealing of student’s high-end bikes and electronic equipment in order to resell it quickly,” Lemmon said.

Students are also encouraged to register their bicycles with the online registry set up by the University Police. Most of the stolen bicycles on campus are unregistered and are hard to track. The registration is a free service.

May 20 BYU officers responded to a report of a suspicious person in the area of the MTC. After locating the individual, officers determined that the person was authorized to be there.

May 14 Persons found in the area of the Crabtree Building after hours were asked to leave and were escorted from the area around 10:14 p.m.

Theft

May 17 A tennis racket was reported stolen in BYU Lot 33. Officers checked the area and took a report.

Fraud

May 17 There is an ongoing investigation involving a reported credit card fraud in the Brimhall Building.

Memorial Weekend DUI Enforcement

The Provo Police Department announced on its website that officers will be conducting a DUI/Drivers’ License Checkpoint on Friday, May 24 at a location within city limits.

The police plan to use DUI checkpoints as an enforcement tool in reducing the number of persons killed and injured in crashes caused by impaired drivers. As officers screen drivers through the check point, those caught driving while impaired “can expect to be arrested, have thier driver license suspended, their vehicle insurance increase, as well as fines, fees, and other very costly expenses,” the department said.

According to the Utah Highway Safety Office, the number of alcohol-impaired driver deaths increased 56 percent between 2010 and 2011 and alcohol-impaired driver crashes were 5.4 times more likely to be fatal than other crashes.

Police Chief Rick Gregory wants people to know the dangers and consequences of holiday drinking and driving.

“Driving while impaired by alcohol and/or drugs can result in innocent people being seriously injured or killed. Our officers will be out in force this Memorial Day Holiday Weekend,” he wrote. “If you drive while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs to the extent that you are impaired, you will be stopped and arrested. Please take the time to plan for a safe evening, use designated drivers, public transportation or taxi services.”

Robbery suspect sought in Provo

A Friday afternoon gun-point robbery in Provo left an employee stunned and knocked to the ground while the perpetrator got away with an undisclosed amount of cash.

Information obtained from the Provo Police Department’s website states that officers responded to the robbery about 5 p.m. May 17 at the Advanced Insurance office on 363 North University Ave.

A female employee said an unknown hispanic man in his 30s, weighing about 150 pounds and 6 feet tall with a thin build, pointed a 9-millimeter handgun at her and demanded she give him money.
April 7, 1972: BYU law enforcement major Richard Floyd McCoy, armed with a hand grenade and an empty pistol, hijacked a Boeing 727. He then parachuted out near Provo with $500,000 in ransom money. McCoy was arrested at his home by the FBI after it was learned that he discussed hypothetical plans for a hijacking with highway patrolman Robert Van Leperen and asked his sister-in-law for help with the hijacking plot. A duffel bag with $499,970 was found in his house. McCoy was a Sunday School teacher in the Provo First Ward. One of McCoy’s Sunday School students said, “All he ever talked about was sin.” In an ironic twist, McCoy was on National Guard duty flying one of the helicopters used in the search for the hijacker. McCoy also wrote his thesis at BYU on how to prevent hijackings.

Rocky had been raped and was shot five times. Her murder went unsolved for 33 years until Salt Lake City Police were able to use DNA evidence found in a soil sample to charge former BYU student Gerald Hicker with the murder. Hicker confessed to her murder in 2010 but said he shot Rocky in self-defense, claiming she took off her clothes, began to pray to the devil and then threatened him with a revolver, which he took from her in a struggle and used to shoot her. Rocky’s family denies Hicker’s claims and asked Hicker to simply tell the truth about Rocky’s killing. Hicker insisted his story was true.

Curtis was never seen or heard from again. Before his execution, Bundy confessed to killing her and burying her body by the highway in Price. A search of the area failed to locate her remains.

Judy handed a note to Hunter to be read to the crowd that announced Judy as the new president. Hunter refused to read the note and stayed silent with his eyes looking down at his notes. The audience spontaneously began singing “We Thank Thee O God for a Prophet,” at which point a man ran up to Judy and pepper-sprayed him. A mob of people then rushed up to Judy and tackled him. The mob subdued Judy by punching and kicking him while they waited for police to take him into custody. Afterward, President Hunter resumed his speech. Judy served six years in prison and was released Aug. 3, 1999.
