BYU takes Society of Professional Journalists awards

The Society of Professional Journalists recognized BYU’s The Universe and ElevenNEWS in its annual Mark of Excellence competition.

The Universe swept the in-depth reporting category for student newspapers in its size category, claimed first-place honors in breaking news reporting, general news reporting and photo illustrations and was recognized with other awards.

BYU’s ElevenNEWS at Noon claimed best all-around newscast, swept the feature reporting category and claimed first place in general news reporting, sports reporting and television feature photography, among other awards.

Awards were presented Saturday at the Society of Professional Journalists’ Region 9 spring conference in Santa Fe, N.M. The region includes Utah, Wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico. The Mark of Excellence Awards honors the best in collegiate journalism and is judged at both the regional and national level. With each region, newspapers compete against similarly sized publications. The Universe competed in the large newspaper category.
