Not only does Utah value the honeybee and its hive, but the whole nation celebrated the benefits from bees’ natural product in September, National Honey Month.
Every state produces honey and a majority of the nation’s honey is harvested during September. Local beekeeping and farming communities recognized the product with various events around the country.
Because of the global shift toward a more green lifestyle, there has been a universal movement toward natural solutions. Healthy and natural alternatives are growing in popularity and rival over-the-counter medicines.
Carolyn Harrington, co-founder of Maty’s Healthy Products and holistic health practitioner, describes some of the unexpected health properties of honey.
“As people search for organic and natural health remedies, it is only logical that they return to nature’s ‘old-folk remedies’ that are tried and true,” Harrington said in an email. “I believe in unearthing the age-old tradition of all-natural remedies that are good for the body and environment.”
Harrington said many consumers are unaware of honey’s versatility. It is a natural product that should be found in every home. Honey has endless remedies and expansive benefits.
“Honey helps maintain energy levels in our body, is good for digestion and offers incredible antiseptic, antioxidant, cleansing and healing properties for head-to-toe remedies,” Harrington said.
The National Honey Board recently announced that they will be partnering with National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners in promoting honey education. They said a universal understanding of honey usage is important in parenting.
“It’s important that health care professionals and families with young children understand the facts about honey,” said Cheri Barber, president of the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners.
One recent study done by Penn State College of Medicine found small doses of honey before bedtime provides better relief from cough and sleep difficulty than an over-the-counter medicine containing dextromethorphan (DM) would provide.
