About The Daily Universe

The Daily Universe is a student-produced media enterprise that publishes a weekly print edition, The Universe, and has online news presence at universe.byu.edu, Apple News and Facebook Instant Articles. Readers can also follow The Daily Universe on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. An official publication of Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, The Daily Universe has a long history of training and mentoring students in reporting, editing and news photography. The Daily Universe in its current iteration is the successor to a line of student-operated campus news publications dating to 1891.

The Daily Universe is an educational lab tied to the curriculum of the news media sequence in the BYU School of Communications.  The Daily Universe is committed to the mission of BYU and its sponsoring institution, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The news organization’s main objective is mentoring and training communications students. Approximately 200 communications students each year work for The Daily Universe as paid student employees or as part of lab assignments tied to journalism classes. The organization functions with an end-to-end business model with professional staff and faculty involved in closely mentoring student reporters, editors, designers, photographers, advertising sales and the business and production staff.
