Glass walls, not metal fencing, to surround Eiffel Tower
Instead of metal fencing surrounding the Eiffel Tower, authorities have installed glass walls to make the security belt more appealing. The see-through panels are being set up at the north and south ends of the site. The renovation is part of a 300 million euro ($350 million) project to modernize the 129-year old tower.
Prosecutor: Man makes deadly toxin for an attack in Germany
German authorities have stopped a Tunisian man in the middle of a plot to use a deadly toxin ricin to poison and kill people in an Islamic extremist attack. The Tunisian man, named Sief Allah H., was taken into custody Tuesday and formally arrested Wednesday after police raided his apartment and discovered evidence of ricin made of castor bean seeds. “We don’t know how, or how widely, the ricin was to have been distributed,” said prosecutors’ spokesman Markus Schmitt.
Hungary sends smugglers to prison for 71 suffocation deaths
Four human traffickers were sentenced to 25 years in prison each after their involvement in the 2015 case in which 71 migrants suffocated to death in the back of a refrigerated truck found on a highway in Austria. The principal defendant, an Afghan man, and three Bulgarian accomplices, were found guilty of committing multiple crimes, including human smuggling and murder.
