Pikachu statue installed in New Orleans park

A New Orleans park now houses the city’s latest monument — a giant statue of Pikachu standing on top of a defunct fountain.

The statue of the popular Pokemon character was discovered Sunday morning in Coliseum Square Park by local residents. The artist is currently unknown and was not authorized to place the statue in the park.

Although it appears to be made of bronze, the statue is composed primarily of fiberglass. An image of a Pokeball and an inscription that reads “#pokemonument” runs along the bottom.

Pokemon Go players say the statue is placed on the location of a Pokemon Gym in the smartphone app.

City officials have not yet said whether the statue will be allowed to remain in the park, but it appears to have been met with at least temporary approval.
