Top 5 late night munchies around Provo

Utah Valley students have a hard time finding good food after midnight and many resort to fast food options. Provo doesn’t have many 24-hour food options or even open-late food.

Because many of the healthier options like Guru’s or Ivie Juice Bar close at 10 p.m., students look for something more substantial than a McDonald’s hamburger.

So what is open late at night that offers good food for students to snack on? Surprisingly, there are quite a few places with a wide variety of flavors.

1) Roll Up Crepes

This hole-in-the-wall late night location is located on State Street on the Provo and Orem border. Offering anything from crepes to salads, Roll Up’s variety will satisfy cravings both savory and sweet. Roll Up is open until 2 a.m. most weekdays and weekends.

The names of its dishes can cause a double take, but try the Bachelorette crepe plate for a sweet mixture of white chocolate and raspberries.

2) Rancheritos

A crowd pleaser that many learn to love during their freshman year is Rancheritos. Located off State Street, this restaurant offers food that will satisfy any Mexican food craving.

From a full styrofoam box of french fries smothered with steak, guacamole, cheese and sour cream to a breakfast burrito, students cannot go wrong at this iconic Provo late night stop.

Rancheritos is open 24 hours, so even if students feel the craving in the middle of the night, Rancheritos is always there for them.

“They have claimed the number one spot in my heart because they are always open, which is difficult to find in Provo, and they really give you bang for your buck,” said student Will Davis, who frequents Rancheritos. “I give them four dollars and they give me four pounds of beans and cheese wrapped in a tortilla.”

3) Hot Potato

Hot Potato is a newcomer into the late-night food scene for all who wander the streets down by the Velour. Serving just about every type of french fry conceivable, Hot Potato makes fries that can be covered in anything, such as chili, and served up with the restaurant’s many dipping sauces.

But along with the fries, Hot Potato serves shakes that combine students’ childhood favorites of pudding and ice cream. The Nutella shake will convert anyone into a lifelong customer. Hot Potato is open until 12:30 a.m. Monday through Thursday and 1 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. Go get your french fry fix.

4) Asahi Sushi Bar

Sushi is something that many students binge eat, and Asahi Sushi Bar in Orem is a hidden gem that will help them eat as much as they want.

Sunday through Thursday, this tucked-away sushi bar offers buy one get one half off on all their sushi rolls. This deal helps to make sushi a much more affordable experience for college students on a budget.

But on the weekends, Asahi opens up specials on select rolls and starters from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m., making sushi the new late-night food to help students like Meagan Knight feel better about eating after 11 p.m.

“Provo has a ton of fast food options which is great, I guess, but eating really fattening and unhealthy food late at night makes me feel terrible,” Knight said. “Sushi isn’t entirely unhealthy… I can eat copious amounts of sushi without feeling terrible. I don’t mind paying a little extra for the sushi over In-N-Out or McDonald’s or whatever. It’s worth it to me. I get my fix, and I don’t feel like garbage.”

5) Cafe West (a.k.a The Hospital)

Cafe West inside the Intermountain Health Care Hospital just off of Bulldog Boulevard offers cheap food in a place you’d least expect anything cheap.

Serving up mostly American food, such as its signature foot-long corn dog, Cafe West might not be the most healthy choice, but many students have made it a staple in their diet. Being able to get a significant meal for around three dollars is good choice and it even offers healthier choices such as bread bowls of soup.

Cafe West is open till 2 a.m. every night with plenty of indoor seating that will fit a large group of friends.

6) Fast Food

Under this category falls all the food that many students grew up on during long road trips. Del Taco, McDonald’s, Taco Bell, Wendy’s, Sonic and In-N-Out are all fantastic examples of these.

Every once in a while, a burger and fries from McDonald’s or a chicken soft taco from Del Taco is all you want, and many of these places are open 24 hours or at least until 1 a.m. Many BYU students, like mechanical engineering student Tyler Kesler, stick to what they grew up on and don’t see a reason to deviate.

“I choose Del Taco because it is obvious that the quality, freshness, and taste of Del is superior to all others, be it late at night, or in the early morn,” Kesler said.

The unavoidable hunger that sets in around midnight for many BYU students needs to be satisfied. Whether it’s for sweets or a full meal, Provo has got its students’ cravings covered.
