Police surround armed man on Arkansas State University campus

The Latest on a report of an armed man at Arkansas State University (all times local):

2:25 p.m.

Authorities in northeast Arkansas are sending a negotiator to speak with an armed man who drove onto the center of Arkansas State University’s campus.

Jonesboro Police Department spokesman Paul Holmes says a negotiator is headed to campus to speak with the man. The university has been on lockdown since about 1:30 p.m. Thursday.

Holmes says police are sending a tactical unit as well to respond to the situation. No shots have been fired and no injuries are reported.

2:05 p.m.

Arkansas State University says there are no reports of injuries after an armed man drove onto campus and that officers have surrounded him.

University spokesman Bill Smith says the man displayed a weapon but no shots have been fired. The university issued an alert at about 1:30 p.m. Thursday telling students to stay away from the student union.

A Jonesboro Police Department spokesman says his agency is helping respond to the incident. Spokesman Paul Holmes says the man is in a pickup truck outside the student union.

Arkansas State University has sent a text message urging the evacuation of the student union after a report of a man with a gun on campus.

University spokesman Bill Smith says the university was placed on lockdown after the man drove onto campus. He says no shots were fired.

Smith says police surrounded the man but people were still urged to stay away from the student union.

The university is located in Jonesboro, about 130 miles northeast of Little Rock.
