Elder Oaks BYU’s August 2015 commencement speaker

Elder Dallin H. Oaks will be the speaker at Brigham Young University’s August 2015 Commencement Exercises.

Elder Dallin H. Oaks will be BYU’s commencement speaker during exercises August 13.

No tickets are required and seating is open. The Marriott Center opens two hours prior to the 4 p.m. ceremony. Those requiring special needs seating may contact the Special Events Office at (801) 422-6022 for assistance. Commencement usually lasts approximately an hour and a half.

Elder Oaks is a 1954 graduate of Brigham Young University and a 1957 graduate of The University of Chicago Law School. He practiced law in Chicago and was a professor of law at The University of Chicago Law School for 10 years. He was president of Brigham Young University from 1971 to 1980, and a justice of the Utah Supreme Court from 1980 until being called as an apostle in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1984.

Elder Oaks has been an officer or member of the board of many business, educational, and charitable organizations, including five years as chairman of the board of directors of the Public Broadcasting Service (PBS). He is the author or co-author of many books and articles on religious and legal subjects. In May, 2013, the Becket Fund for Religious Liberty awarded him the Canterbury Medal for “courage in the defense of religious liberty.”

Students who graduate in June are invited to attend the August graduation ceremonies. Students who graduate in December are invited to attend the next April graduation ceremonies.

Commencement exercises will be broadcast live on BYU TV, BYU Radio, Classical 89 KBYU-FM and byutv.org.
