Freshman Shane Monroe beat the University of Utah’s Cedric Willems 6–0, 6–3 in the final to clinch the Flight A singles title. He also beat senior teammate Francis Sargeant in the semifinal to advance to Saturday’s match.

“I feel really good about my performance the last two matches, but the first match I didn’t think I played that well,” Monroe said. “First rounds I’m always a little nervous, but then it seems that during a tournament I always get better as the tournament goes on.”

In doubles, Sargeant and freshman David Ball took first place by outplaying Utah’s Willems and Jamey Swiggart 8–4.

Sophomores Jeremy Bourgeois and Juan Canales also participated in the tournament, and Bourgeois also beat a Ute, Johan Jonhagen, to win the Flight B consolation bracket.

“At the start of the tournament, it was pretty rocky, but I got some match practice under my belt,” Bourgeois said.

He said this tournament was good preparation for the Mountain Region Championships that will take place Oct. 15–18 in Las Vegas.
